25 Years of Hannum at UMass!

Thom's 25th Anniversary

This year, Thom Hannum and the Minuteman Marching band are celebrating a huge anniversary. This is Thom's 25th year at UMass! We've been lucky enough to have him around for a quarter of a century. Hopefully, he'll stick around for 25 more!

Every Fall, UMass holds its Homecoming Weekend. This October, over 50 alumni from the UMass Drumline turned out to honor Thom and his success. Friends and family gathered after a UMass football game for an evening of thanks, awards, and reminiscing. Check out the pictures at UMassDrumline.org!

Hannum & Queen Play at PASIC

Hannum and Queen

If you went to the Percussive Arts Society's International Convention this November, you witnessed the clinic of a lifetime! If not, you missed out. Thom got together with former BLAST! snare drum soloist Jeff Queen and put together one of the best performances/clinics PASIC has ever seen.

Thom and Jeff discussed the importance of practicing to a consistent beat, but that this doesn't necessarily mean a metronome. The two demonstrated how improvising a solo over a recorded piece of music is a great way to work on timing, as well as solo and improv techniques. They also performed part of Thom's solo Got A Pulse? from the Drop6 Solo book Aptitude. And viewers were lucky enough to see Jeff perform his 2-time DCI I&E-winning and PASIC Competition-winning solo Tribute.
